Rant: Web 2.0
First of all I just want to say: Sorry for going against my rules about not bringing up MexiCompany, but I don’t have another place to put this, and I don’t want to create yet another blog on my sever.
WEB 2.0!
When people finally figure out what it is, they’re amazed that they are the ones that make websites… websites now. The web designer just has to make the platform for the users to (so to speak) throw up on.
Anyway. This goes on for some time, then someone gets the idea, “I’m going to screw everyone over” and erases everything on a certain page. Everyone gets pissed. Then everyone is whining about how easy it is to deface websites in web2.0. I believe this is where most people stop ranting about web2.0 and deal with it….
However, I want to take a different approach on this subject:
As a web designer and manager. I have my own opinions on why and why I don’t like web2.0 sites… I like them because they’re easy. Wikipedia is freaking huge and a giant success. I like that people are willing to put their input in there. Yeah. They’re assholes if they want to deface pages, but they can be fixed. Oh well, get over it.
The thing I don’t like about web2.0 is:
I put time, effort, money, etc into my website. I make all the content on my website, I don’t even use a CMS (which I should). With other websites that are 2.0. The web-admin just has to create the platform, like a wiki, and let the guests make the websites. The web-admin just pays expenses, and keeps the site running. It’s a lazy job. I put way too much time into my website because I want it to be presentable to anyone, and I want to have credit for the content put on it. I will not make a web2.0 website simply because this.
I have a perfect example for this too. StrategyWiki is an amazing success, right?! I think so. Well, if you didn’t know. The web-admin for that site also created ABXY. The amazing failure. ABXY used to be known as DSMeet. Where users could get together and talk games. After a while, they upgraded and turned into a multi-platform website, and basically destroyed the community. So now it’s SW(Strategy WIki) and ABXY. SW is still growing strong an gaining revenue, while ABXY is near extinction.
These websites are hosted on the SAME SERVER. Strategy Wiki sucked the life from ABXY. A freaking WIKI did that!
ABXY is an amazing site with long hard hours put into the coding itself. However, the wiki was just put up, the images were edited and the site was done, they let the users make the content…
Thus, this concludes my rant on web2.0. I’m not for it, I’m not against it. I just prefer the old web more.
